THE GREAT COMMISSION
Our Lord Jesus Christ gave His Church the Great Commission. It is found in Matthew 28:19-20, "Matthew 28:19-20 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
We who follow the Lord Jesus need to have a part in fulfilling this commission. We cannot all go into all the world individually, but we can be witnesses of the Risen Savior wherever God has put us. We can also support those who go to other parts of the world with the Gospel. We should support our missionaries with prayer and giving.
My son, Mark Baxter, is the Director of the Youth With a Mission base in Jacksonville, Florida. This base was started the first of 2001. Mark wrote to me about the team of young people he was gathering who were committed to fulfilling Christ's mission. His job is to train the young people. They study missions, evangelism, prayer, and Bible. They go out on short term missions to use what they learn. They blend mercy ministries with evangelism.
Mark wrote to me expressing his vision for the work. This is what he said:
"Most people just don't have a good understanding of the world in regards to missions. The church in the U.S. has neglected the hard areas (i.e., N. Afraica, the Middle East, Asia, and China) where over half of the world lives and have sent 97% of its missionaries to south and central America, the southern 2/3rds of Africa, and other areas where the resistance has been less formidable. The focus at YWAM Jacksonville will be on the areas where around two billion people live in 'unreached people groups.'
Missionaries are needed everywhere, but we want to do our part in bringing some correction to the imbalanced missionary force."
